Supporter Spotlight

Intern Spotlight: Isabella Gauza

Isabella is a senior at Arizona State University studying psychology. Graduating in May 2026, she hopes to pursue a career as a counselor.

As a new intern at the Arizona Burn Foundation (ABF), I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the dedication and efforts that go into keeping communities safe. At my first Community Smoke Alarm Walk, I didn’t know what to expect, but the efforts of ABF, volunteers, fire departments, and community members went above and beyond anything I could have imagined.

As I entered each home, I gained a new perspective on the true impacts made by ABF. I realized many individuals face barriers that prevent them from checking, installing, or accessing smoke alarms, and that’s where we step in. After each installation, nothing beats the pure gratitude and relief experienced by everyone we help.

Along with the installation of smoke alarms, volunteers educate residents to ensure they understand fire safety protocols. I thought I knew a lot about fire safety, but I’ve gained invaluable insight throughout my experiences. As part of the education process, volunteers provide each resident with a bag of educational materials, including a “What To Do If You Are Burned” informational sheet, a Smoke Alarms 101 pamphlet, a Home Fire Safety Checklist, and a Home Fire Escape Plan, in which residents can draw out their own escape plan. Additionally, we always provide a Spanish version of these materials as well, showing that ABF values inclusivity. Beyond installations, ABF and the volunteers take the time to talk through these materials with the residents, making an even greater impact.

Ultimately, if anything should be taken away from my experience, it is that I encourage you to support ABF through volunteering, donating, or even spreading the word. Without the determination and efforts made by communities and volunteers, none of this work would be possible.

I am proud to say that through ABF, I have seen the powerful message we send – which is that everyone deserves to feel safe and be supported. This work is not only immensely rewarding, but truly lifesaving.
